Despite a season that may not have met expectations, the Detroit Tigers will send a contingent of four players to the 2026 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The Midsummer Classic is set to be held at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Tuesday, July 14.

Among the honorees is rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle, who earned an All-Star selection in his debut MLB season. He will be joined by catcher Dillon Dingler, left fielder Riley Greene, and pitcher Justin Verlander, who received a “Legend’s Pick” nod for his 10th career All-Star appearance.

Riley Greene, initially selected as a reserve, will now start in the outfield, taking the place of the injured reigning MVP Aaron Judge. Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger also moves into a starting role. McGonigle and Dingler were named as reserves, while Verlander, despite his selection, will not be an active participant due to rehabilitation from injury.

Tigers in the Midsummer Classic

This marks Greene’s third consecutive All-Star selection, making him the first Tiger to achieve this feat since Miguel Cabrera’s seven-straight selections from 2010-2016. Dingler, who currently leads all MLB catchers in FanGraphs WAR (3.9), is making his first All-Star appearance. While the Tigers had six All-Stars in 2025, including four starters, this year’s group of four matches the team’s highest total in the last 11 seasons, last seen in 2015.

McGonigle’s Impressive Rookie Season

Kevin McGonigle’s rookie season has been a standout performance. Entering 2026 as Detroit’s top prospect and a consensus top-3 prospect in baseball, he quickly ascended through the minor leagues in 2025. The Tigers placed him in the Opening Day lineup, where he made an immediate impact, going 4-for-5 with two doubles in his MLB debut. His offensive prowess continued, with a .283/.392/.420 slash line and strong defensive contributions at shortstop and third base. Despite a stellar season, McGonigle is not a starter due to the exceptional performance of Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr.

Dingler’s Elite Performance Behind the Plate

Dillon Dingler has emerged as one of baseball’s premier catchers in 2026. He leads all backstops with a 3.9 fWAR and has already set career highs in home runs (19) and RBIs (60). His performance extends beyond offense, ranking in the 96th percentile in expected slugging percentage and the 97th percentile in Fielding Run Value. Dingler’s game-calling has also been instrumental in supporting a starting rotation that boasts a 3.65 FIP and 3.50 ERA. His rise from being the Tigers’ No. 14 prospect in 2024 to a franchise cornerstone highlights his significant development.

Greene Solidifies Middle-of-the-Order Presence

Riley Greene continues to be a vital offensive force for the Tigers. While his home run and RBI totals may not match his 2025 campaign, a closer examination reveals he might be having his most efficient season. Greene has reduced strikeouts and achieved a career-high 12.8% walk rate, positioning him to set a new career best in hits. His comfort at the plate and ability to consistently reach base have cemented his role as a reliable middle-of-the-order hitter with potential for further growth.

Verlander’s Career Achievement

Justin Verlander’s 10th All-Star selection is a testament to his enduring legacy, even with a season limited by injuries. The 43-year-old pitcher, who has made only one start in 2026, was chosen as a “Legend’s Pick” by Commissioner Rob Manfred. This honor mirrors selections of other baseball greats like Miguel Cabrera and Clayton Kershaw. Verlander, who announced his intention to retire after the 2026 season, will not participate in the game as he continues his rehabilitation. This recognition serves as a celebratory moment for the likely first-ballot Hall of Famer as he concludes his storied career with the team that drafted him over two decades ago.

The 2026 MLB All-Star Game will be broadcast on Fox at 8 p.m. ET. Streaming options include the Fox One App and Fubo.
