The second day of the World Cup will feature the other two host nations as the United States and Canada officially begin their tournament campaigns. Both teams face significant hurdles as they kick off their respective matches, with key players sidelined due to injury.

Canada’s Historic Debut

Friday, June 12, marks a historic occasion for Canadian soccer as the nation plays its first-ever World Cup game on home soil. The match against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto will be a crucial early test for the Canadian squad. However, the team will be without its biggest star, Bayern Munich left back Alphonso Davies. Davies is still recovering from a hamstring injury that limited his appearances for Bayern Munich last season. His absence, particularly on the left flank, will undoubtedly impact Canada’s attacking prowess. The onus will fall on players like Juventus midfielder Jonathan David and forward Cyle Larin to step up and compensate for Davies’ creative input. A strong opening performance is vital for Canada as they look to emerge from what is anticipated to be a highly competitive group.

Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Resilience

Bosnia-Herzegovina qualified for the World Cup by defeating Italy in a dramatic UEFA playoff final decided by penalties. This marks their second appearance as an independent nation, with their last World Cup participation in 2014. The team is captained by the veteran 40-year-old striker Edin Džeko. Following a period of struggles, the appointment of manager Sergej Barbarez in 2024 has brought a more pragmatic approach. While Bosnia may not dominate possession, their brand of soccer is described as effective and will present a stern challenge to their opponents.

United States’ Quarterfinal Ambitions

Later on Friday, the United States will begin their World Cup journey against Paraguay in Los Angeles. For the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT), anything less than a victory would be considered a disappointment. The team has historically struggled to advance beyond the quarterfinals in modern World Cup history, and with an expanded 32-team knockout stage, avoiding an early exit is a primary objective.

Defender Chris Richards could bolster the USMNT’s backline, returning after an ankle injury sustained at his club, Crystal Palace. Richards is considered the team’s best center back, and his presence is deemed crucial for the U.S. to make a deep run in the tournament. Despite the leadership of 35-year-old captain Tim Ream, Richards’ defensive capabilities are highly valued.

Under coach Mauricio Pochettino, the U.S. is expected to deploy a 3-4-2-1 formation, utilizing wingbacks Sergiño Dest and Antonee Robinson to provide width and support in midfield alongside Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie.

Paraguay Faces Striker Reliance

Paraguay’s campaign has also been impacted by an injury to star attacker Julio Enciso, who suffered a knee injury just a week prior to the tournament. While Enciso might return later in the World Cup, his absence means that striker Antonio Sanabria will likely become the focal point of Paraguay’s attack. Sanabria, who has 48 appearances for his country since 2013, has scored seven goals. His ability to lead the line and convert chances will be critical for Paraguay’s hopes.

Key facts

Team Opponent Venue Time (ET) Key Absences
Canada Bosnia-Herzegovina Toronto 3 p.m. Alphonso Davies (Hamstring)
United States Paraguay Los Angeles 9 p.m.

The opening matches of the World Cup for both the United States and Canada are more than just early group stage fixtures; they represent the start of their aspirations for the tournament. For Canada, it’s a chance to make history on home soil, while for the USMNT, it’s a critical step towards overcoming past disappointments and achieving their highest finish in decades. The key player absences for both sides add an element of unpredictability, forcing coaches to adapt strategies and relying on other members of the squad to deliver.
