Nottingham Forest’s ambitious plans to redevelop the City Ground and significantly increase its capacity have encountered further obstacles, with work now unlikely to fully commence until next summer. The Premier League club had initially targeted this summer to begin the Peter Taylor Stand redevelopment, aiming to boost stadium capacity from 30,500 to 45,000.

However, the project is currently on hold pending approval from Rushcliffe Borough Council, which has yet to schedule a date for its planning committee to review the proposals. While club sources are hopeful for a September decision, allowing for minor preparatory work, the full-scale redevelopment is realistically looking at a 2025 start.

Key Facts

Aspect Details
Current Capacity 30,500
Target Capacity (Phase 1) 45,000
Estimated Completion Full work likely 2025
Key Approval Body Rushcliffe Borough Council

Planning Hurdles

The redevelopment process involves a complex web of approvals from various authorities, including Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, in addition to Rushcliffe Borough Council. A significant challenge lies in demonstrating how the increased capacity will be managed on matchdays, particularly concerning crowd and traffic management. Plans to close certain lanes around Trent Bridge after matches to aid fan egress require a traffic management trial.

The Rushcliffe Borough Council has stated it is “working positively with the club on progressing the application and working together towards a committee date.” A special committee meeting will be convened once the initial approval stages are further along.

Ambitious Vision

Despite the delays, Nottingham Forest remains committed to a long-term vision that could eventually see the City Ground’s capacity rise to 52,000. The current proposals represent a significant expansion from earlier plans, which had focused on increasing capacity to 35,000.

The fresh set of proposals, submitted in January, outline extensive work across three of the four stands. The first phase aims for the 45,000 capacity, with a subsequent redevelopment of the Brian Clough Stand planned to add another 7,000 seats. The new Peter Taylor Stand is envisioned to be a substantial structure, standing 58 metres tall and tripling the current stand’s capacity from 5,000 to 15,000 seats. Additionally, the club intends to fill in the corners of the Trent End, creating an estimated 5,000 more seats during this initial phase.

Fan Engagement

The Nottingham Forest Supporters Trust has launched a campaign, “Our City. Our Club. Our Future. Back the City Ground,” encouraging fans to register their support for the redevelopment plans by emailing the local council. Owner Evangelos Marinakis views the project as crucial for sustaining the club’s top-flight ambitions.
