Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford has openly acknowledged that a move away from the club might be essential for him to realize his aspiration of becoming England’s primary goalkeeper.

Trafford, who joined Manchester City from Burnley in a significant £30 million transfer last summer, arrived with the expectation of competing for the first-choice position. However, the subsequent signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma relegated Trafford to a backup role.

Despite the limited opportunities, the 23-year-old managed to make four Premier League appearances for the Citizens. He also played a notable role in the club’s victories in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Currently with the England squad for the upcoming international tournament, Trafford is expected to provide cover and competition for established keepers Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson.

Challenging for England’s Top Spot

Speaking ahead of England’s opening match, Trafford emphasized the importance of consistent club-level game time to be considered for England’s starting lineup. He noted the historical trend of national team goalkeepers being regular starters for their respective clubs.

“I don’t think there has been a goalie start for any of the top nations that isn’t a number one at the club, so going off history, I’d say, yeah,” Trafford stated.

He added, “You never know. Whether I move, whether I don’t move, I do what’s right for me and my career.”

A Season of Learning and Growth

Trafford reflected on the past season as a challenging but invaluable learning experience. “It’s obviously been very challenging the past season, but looking back, I’ve learned so much, I’ve developed so much,” he said.

He described the period as a new and demanding experience, pushing him to maintain focus and improvement daily. This dedication, he believes, contributed to his role in winning two major trophies with the team.

“Some days were harder than others, but the one thing I wanted to keep doing was keep winning the day and just improving every day, and because I kept doing that I came out of the season having played a part in winning the two trophies.”

Potential Suitors Emerge

Several clubs have reportedly shown interest in signing Trafford this summer, with Newcastle United, Leeds United, and Tottenham Hotspur mentioned as potential destinations. His desire for regular first-team action makes him an attractive prospect for teams seeking to strengthen their goalkeeping options.

Trafford’s comments underscore the common dilemma faced by talented young players at top clubs: balancing the prestige of playing for a major team with the necessity of regular game time for international aspirations. His candidness suggests an imminent decision regarding his future, with a move away from Manchester City appearing increasingly likely if he is to fulfill his potential on the international stage.
