Joshua Báez, a top prospect in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, achieved a career milestone Tuesday night, blasting four home runs in a single game for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. The emotional performance came on the third anniversary of his father’s death, a coincidence Báez felt deeply.

A Career-Defining Night

Báez’s four-homer game was instrumental in Memphis’s 12-5 victory over the Nashville Sounds at AutoZone Park. The 22-year-old outfielder went 4-for-5 at the plate, driving in a career-high seven runs. This remarkable feat makes him just the third Minor League player this decade to hit four home runs in one game and the first in Redbirds franchise history.

Honoring His Father’s Memory

The significance of the night was amplified by its timing. Báez’s father, Jose Manuel, was a baseball enthusiast who played until his mid-30s and often shared his knowledge of the game with his son. “I was just feeling him the whole time,” Báez said after the game. “I think that he guided me today to be able to do that.”

His mother, Yris, also present at the game, echoed her son’s sentiment. “I knew he was here with him from the sky down. He was able to give him the strength. I could feel it through the whole night,” she stated, translated by her son. “There were different vibes today. I’m super happy and proud of him.”

A Display of Power

Báez showcased his potent offense throughout the game. His first home run, a three-run shot to left field in the first inning, traveled 108.2 mph off the bat. He followed that with a 408-foot blast to center field in his next at-bat. In the fifth inning, he added a solo shot off a hanging slider. His fourth and final homer of the night, launched with a 49-degree launch angle, drew an awed reaction from Memphis broadcaster Alex Coil, who remarked, “He hit that one to his dad.”

In total, Báez’s four home runs accounted for 1,510 feet of distance. This performance surpasses his previous career high of 20 home runs set last season, bringing his total to 23 already this year.

Looking Ahead

Despite the celebratory atmosphere and thoughts of a potential promotion to the Major Leagues, Báez remains focused on his current role with the Redbirds. “I’m in Memphis. I’d rather be nowhere else right now, because the team needs me. We’re in a playoff push and that’s exactly what I’m trying to do,” he said.

Memphis broadcaster Alex Coil believes Báez is on the cusp of reaching the Majors. “That would be the biggest gift that he could give to his family,” Coil commented, “but also in memory of his father.”
