Rohit Sharma has entered an exclusive club of Indian cricketers, becoming the fifth batter to achieve 14,000 runs in List A cricket. The Indian captain reached this significant milestone during the second ODI against Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Elite Company

The prolific opening batter achieved the feat in his 356th List A match, accumulating 14,038 runs. This places him in the company of Indian cricket legends such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid, who have all crossed the 14,000-run mark in the format. Tendulkar leads this esteemed list with 21,999 runs, followed by Kohli (16,447), Ganguly (15,622), and Dravid (15,271). Sharma also boasts an impressive 37 centuries in List A cricket.

Match Context

Sharma’s milestone came during a brisk 48-ball innings of 48, which included six fours and two sixes, before he was dismissed by Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan. His contribution, though cut short, was part of India’s strong performance in the second ODI.

India’s Dominant Performance

The Indian team posted a formidable total of 402 all out, thanks to a monumental 224-run partnership for the third wicket between captain Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan. Gill went on to score 154, his ninth ODI century, while Kishan registered his second ODI century with a knock of 125. This partnership laid the foundation for India’s impressive total.

The match saw Yashasvi Jaiswal opening the innings alongside Sharma as part of India’s World Cup preparations, with Gill moving down to the number three position. Jaiswal was dismissed early, but Sharma and then Gill and Kishan took control.

India ultimately secured a comprehensive 170-run victory in the second ODI, sealing the three-match series 2-0. The win underscores India’s strong form heading into future tournaments.
