“It’s the second year in a row, I think it’s really important to have days like this, for us to give back and show appreciation for the NHS,” Hamilton stated. The racers engaged with individuals by talking and posing for photographs, aiming to provide a morale boost.

Born with cerebral palsy, Hamilton’s early life involved significant time in hospitals, with doctors initially doubting his ability to walk. Despite these challenges, he has achieved remarkable success in motorsport. His ties to Crewe are deep-rooted, as his mother was born at Leighton Hospital. Hamilton shared that he used to visit his mother’s family in the area monthly, making Crewe a place close to his heart.

When asked about his motivation for these visits, Hamilton emphasized the feelings of loneliness and lack of companionship that patients can experience. “It can get a bit lonely and you don’t really have people to talk to,” he explained. He also highlighted the potential for the NHS to be undervalued, seeing his visits as a way to express his appreciation.

During his time on the wards, Hamilton took the opportunity to speak with patients individually. One such interaction was with Christine Ward, who was recovering from a broken leg sustained in a car accident. Ward expressed her gratitude for the visit, noting how uplifting it was. “We have had such a laugh I didn’t think I would feel this good again after what’s happened to me,” she said. She added, “They don’t have to do this, they are so busy but they don’t realise how it builds people up.”
