The Washington Wizards have added a new defensive-minded prospect to their roster, acquiring the draft rights to big man Felix Okpara with the 46th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. The move involved a trade with the Orlando Magic, sending the 51st and 60th picks in the second round to Orlando.

Okpara, a senior from the University of Tennessee, was recognized for his defensive abilities, earning a spot on the 2025-26 Southeastern Conference All-Defensive team. His physical attributes, including a 9-foot-4 standing reach, and his ability to defend multiple positions were highlighted by the Wizards’ front office.

“He’s unique in that he can switch, but he also protects the rim and blocks shots and gets steals, and (he) does it with a low foul rate for someone that protects the rim at that level,” said Wizards general manager Will Dawkins.

Wizards’ Defensive Focus

The Wizards’ decision to draft Okpara underscores their commitment to improving their defense, particularly in the frontcourt. The team finished the 2025-26 season ranked 29th in the NBA in defensive-rebounding percentage, signaling a clear area for enhancement. Okpara’s defensive skill set, which includes shot-blocking and the ability to guard perimeter players thanks to his soccer background, is seen as a valuable addition.

Okpara’s offensive game is considered raw, but his athleticism and role as a “lob threat” and “rim runner” were noted by Amber Nichols, the Wizards’ director of amateur evaluation. His background, growing up in Nigeria and initially focusing on soccer, has contributed to his agile footwork, which he now applies effectively on the basketball court.

Player Development and Future Outlook

Okpara spent his first two college seasons at Ohio State before transferring to Tennessee. For late second-round picks like Okpara, a common pathway involves signing a two-way contract, allowing them to split time between the NBA team and its G League affiliate.

“I think we’ll probably have to have that conversation, get him in town and kind of work with his agent on that,” Dawkins stated regarding a potential two-way deal. “Get him into summer league and get a feel for that.”

The Wizards’ pursuit of big-man depth this offseason was a stated priority, with Okpara’s addition not altering that goal. The team currently has Alex Sarr, Anthony Davis, and Tristan Vukčević in their big-man rotation. Dawkins indicated that the team still plans to address the position in free agency, aiming to complement the existing group’s strengths, which include Tristan’s floor spacing and Okpara’s rim protection.

“We like the versatility that our big group has right now: the floor spacing with Tristan, the rim protection with Felix, with his energy and youth. So, we’ll probably want to add something else on top of Alex and Anthony Davis,” Dawkins added.

Okpara’s intangibles also impressed the Wizards. Teammates reportedly described him as supportive, vocal, and a “connector,” qualities that align with the team’s culture. He averaged 8.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game during his senior season at Tennessee, shooting 59.7 percent from the field.
