Dustin Poirier Opens Up on Airport Arrest, Mental Health Struggles
UFC fighter Dustin Poirier discusses the incident that led to his arrest at an Atlanta airport, citing struggles with depression and alcohol.

UFC fighter Dustin Poirier has publicly addressed the incident that led to his arrest at an Atlanta airport on Sunday, June 21, revealing that his actions stemmed from a difficult battle with depression and alcohol.
Poirier, known as “The Diamond,” was taken into custody by Atlanta police following a disturbance involving airport staff. Video footage of the event later emerged, reportedly showing a drunken Poirier making threats towards police officers.
Por que importa
In a recent interview with “The Diary of a CEO,” Poirier shared his perspective on the events, admitting he “really messed up.” He explained that the day of the incident was Father’s Day, and while he had a good morning with his children, he began to feel a familiar sense of overwhelming sadness during his travel.
“It’s like a cloud in my head that I just can’t get out from under, so I started drinking and my emotions got the best of me,” Poirier stated. He expressed immediate regret, questioning if he had jeopardized his career.
Poirier disclosed that his father is an alcoholic and has struggled with addiction throughout his life, a factor that weighed on him during the incident. “I was angry at the world and I could not stop thinking about my father. He’s actually homeless right not. I try to help him out and he’s back out on the street,” Poirier said. “Not that anything’s an excuse but I wasn’t myself.”
He revealed he has returned to therapy to manage his mental health. Poirier noted that he had previously engaged in therapy years ago and felt better, leading him to stop practicing the learned coping mechanisms. However, when he experienced similar feelings of depression, he turned to alcohol despite knowing it was detrimental.
“Alcohol has never benefited me, especially in times like that where I’m mentally not the best,” Poirier admitted. He acknowledged that while his father’s struggles are not an excuse for his own actions, he knew better than to drink when he was feeling mentally unwell.
Poirier emphasized the severity of his bouts with depression, stating, “I’ve had bouts with depression throughout my career. But, man, when it hits me it’s bad.”
