Shreyas Iyer Slams India’s “Atrocious” T20 Collapse After Record Defeat to England

India captain Shreyas Iyer did not hold back in his assessment of his team's performance after a historic 125-run loss to England in the third T20 International, labeling the 76 all-out effort as "atrocious" with no excuses.

India’s captain Shreyas Iyer did not mince words after his team’s humiliating 125-run defeat to England in the third T20 International, calling the performance “atrocious” and emphasizing the lack of any valid excuses. The historic loss, which saw India dismissed for just 76 runs, handed England an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Iyer’s candid post-match assessment highlighted a significant batting collapse, with India losing five wickets within the crucial powerplay, a period he identified as the turning point of the match. England had set India a target of 202, but the visitors were bowled out in just 11.4 overs, marking their second-lowest total in T20 international history.

“I think it was atrocious. I couldn’t use a better word, honestly. Losing by such a big margin is definitely not acceptable,” Iyer stated in his post-match press conference. “First things first, I feel that we need to accept this loss and completely go back to the drawing board and see what we did wrong.”

A Disappointing Batting Display

While acknowledging that the pitch at Trent Bridge might not have been conducive to scoring a massive 200 runs, Iyer placed the primary blame on India’s batting execution. He pointed out that the rapid loss of wickets early in the innings gave England a significant advantage and momentum that India could not recover from.

“Looking at the wicket, I don’t think that it was a 200 wicket, first of all, to start with,” Iyer explained. “But other than that, the way we batted, we lost four wickets in the powerplay. I think that itself did create the momentum, and definitely I feel that we lost over there. So, we’ve got to go back to the drawing board.”

The captain also stressed the importance of adaptability on the field, noting that while pre-match planning is essential, players must be able to think on their feet and adjust their strategies according to the conditions. He felt that the team failed to execute their plans effectively, particularly in pacing their innings while chasing a large total.

“I think you can plan a lot once you’re there in the team meeting,” he said. “But once you come to the ground, you need to adapt as quickly as possible and try to figure out what lengths are important to bowl on a particular wicket. Like this today, the hard lengths were helping the bowlers pretty well. I think we didn’t execute that much. And even in our batting, I think when you’re chasing 200, you need to pace up your innings. You need to have a set of pattern how you’re going to go about that inning. So we fell a bit short in terms of that. So definitely execution was awful.”

Individual Responsibility and Future Improvement

With only two matches remaining in the series, Iyer urged his teammates to take individual ownership of their performances and focus on contributing to match-winning efforts. He believes that a collective improvement will stem from each player identifying their own shortcomings and working to rectify them.

“We’ve played awful cricket for sure, but a lot of learnings from it as well,” the skipper said. “Players have to start thinking how to basically make an impact or create that momentum towards the team. So definitely every individual have to think by himself and see how they can win the matches and take that sort of responsibility.”

This blunt admission of failure from Iyer is a notable departure from more diplomatic responses often seen in post-match interviews. His willingness to label the performance as “atrocious” signals a demand for accountability within the Indian squad. However, the challenge now lies in translating this self-awareness into tangible improvements in the remaining fixtures.
