With the 2026 Major League Baseball Draft on the horizon, several college athletes with local ties have earned recognition on ESPN’s updated list of the top 250 prospects. The rankings, compiled by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel, highlight players from the University of Cincinnati (UC) Bearcats and other notable high school standouts, offering a glimpse into the future of professional baseball. The MLB Draft is scheduled to take place July 11-12 in Philadelphia.

UC Bearcats In The Mix

The University of Cincinnati will have several players featured in McDaniel’s top 250. Among them is catcher Jack Natili, who demonstrated impressive offensive capabilities as a junior. Natili posted a .339 batting average with a 1.098 OPS, driving in 65 runs on 19 home runs. He also contributed 15 doubles and scored 50 runs. Natili’s collegiate career began at Rutgers before transferring to UC. McDaniel ranks Natili at No. 69 on his prospect list.

Another Bearcat making waves is pitcher Josh Taylor. Taylor has already set UC career records for both wins and strikeouts. His collegiate success followed a strong high school career at West Clermont and a stint with the Midland Redskins. Taylor is ranked No. 242 by McDaniel.

Local High School Standouts

Beyond the collegiate ranks, the list also features local high school talent. Matt Ponatoski, a multi-sport athlete from Moeller High School, is also committed to playing quarterback for the Kentucky Wildcats. Despite his football commitments, Ponatoski has indicated that the MLB Draft remains his primary focus. He is ranked No. 120 by McDaniel.

Additionally, pitcher Grant Slightom is generating significant buzz. MLB.com’s Jim Callis noted on July 7 that Slightom is being discussed as a potential top 40 or top 50 pick. Callis highlighted Slightom’s athleticism and projectable 6-foot-5 frame, noting his velocity has increased to 98 mph. Slightom’s performance at the combine and strong interviews have led to a surge up draft boards. McDaniel has Slightom ranked at No. 60.

Factors Influencing Draft Stock

The inclusion of these players on ESPN’s top prospect list underscores their potential to be selected in the upcoming MLB Draft. Factors such as on-field performance, athletic ability, projectability, and performance in pre-draft showcases and interviews all contribute to a player’s draft stock. For many, these rankings represent a significant step toward achieving their professional baseball aspirations.
