Inter Miami forward German Berterame is conscious and recovering in hospital after suffering a serious head collision during Saturday’s MLS match against CF Montreal, coach Guillermo Hoyos said after the game. The incident occurred in the 70th minute at Saputo Stadium and led to a lengthy stoppage as medical staff attended to the 27-year-old Mexican international.

Incident details

Berterame was involved in an aerial challenge with Montreal defender Efrain Morales. He landed awkwardly on the pitch and appeared to lose consciousness. Montreal’s Brayan Vera immediately signaled for medical assistance, and players from both sides gathered around the fallen forward. After several minutes of on-field treatment, Berterame was placed on a stretcher and taken to an ambulance. He did not appear to have regained consciousness before leaving the field.

The challenge also drew a penalty for Inter Miami. Referee Rubiel Vazquez awarded the spot kick after determining that an elbow made contact with Berterame’s head during the aerial duel.

Medical update

Coach Guillermo Hoyos spoke to reporters after the match, offering reassurance. “He’s recovering right now, he’s fine, conscious,” Hoyos said. “His family is aware of everything. They’re calm. The most important thing is that he’s okay, and right now he is ok.”

Hoyos described the scene as alarming. “We were alarmed at first because the blow was very strong. On the play, it’s obvious there was an elbow, which is why a penalty was awarded, he fell like dead weight. I think he might have already been unconscious given the severity of the impact. He took that elbow and hit the ground hard. It was a moment of great desperation and deep sadness, because it went beyond football, and all that. It’s about human life, that’s what matters most. So, we just hope everything turns out well.”

The club’s official social media account also posted a brief video clip of Hoyos’s comments, confirming that Berterame was conscious and stable.

Match implications

Luis Suarez converted the penalty awarded for the incident, scoring the only goal of the game to give Inter Miami a 1-0 victory. After scoring, Suarez held up Berterame’s shirt in tribute to his teammate. The win was Inter Miami’s sixth consecutive league victory, extending their strong run of form.
