The New York Yankees have less than a week to decide how aggressively to reshape their roster before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline. With star outfielder Aaron Judge on the injured list and the offense struggling, the team is being linked to multiple upgrades. One of the most intriguing names on the market is San Francisco Giants infielder Luis Arraez, a four-time All-Star and three-time batting champion.

MLB.com’s Mike Petriello listed the Yankees as a top-five fit for Arraez in a July 24 analysis. “Given how much the offense has collapsed since Aaron Judge went down, and because this team really does strike out too much, this is a fit that’s going to come up a lot, we think,” Petriello wrote. However, he also noted that the fit is “imperfect” due to the Yankees’ current roster construction.

Arraez’s 2026 Season and Contract Situation

Arraez, 29, is in the midst of another strong campaign. Through 98 games, he is hitting .326 with 127 hits and 38 RBIs. He won his second consecutive Silver Slugger award in 2025 and remains one of the most difficult batters to strike out in the majors. The Giants signed him to a one-year, $12 million deal for 2026, and he is expected to command a significant multi-year contract in free agency next winter.

The Yankees would be acquiring Arraez as a rental, but his elite contact skills and high batting average could provide a jolt to a lineup that has struggled to score runs in Judge’s absence.

Roster Fit and Potential Obstacles

Despite the offensive appeal, Arraez’s addition would create a positional puzzle. The Yankees already have Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second base, Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt at first, and Giancarlo Stanton and Judge (when healthy) taking designated hitter at-bats. Arraez has played second base, third base, and outfield in his career, but his defensive value is limited, and the Yankees’ current infield alignment is already crowded.

Petriello pointed out that Chisholm has had a down year, but he is not the top priority for the front office. The Yankees’ biggest deficiencies are at catcher and in the bullpen, according to ESPN’s Jorge Castillo. “New York’s wish list includes a catcher, a leverage reliever or two, and a right-handed-hitting outfielder,” Castillo wrote in a July 24 trade deadline tracker. “Catcher and reliever take precedent over an outfielder, but with uncertainty surrounding Aaron Judge’s status, the Yankees could opt for some insurance.”

Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has publicly stated that the team is open to making moves. “I think we’re open-minded at the deadline to try to improve ourselves,” Cashman said on July 9, according to The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner. “Period. End of story. We’ll evaluate what’s available and try to push in on anything that makes sense that we can acquire that will make us better, whether it’s pitching or offense.”

What This Means for the Yankees’ Playoff Push

The Yankees entered the final week of July in the thick of the American League wild-card race, but the offense has slumped without Judge. Adding Arraez would give the lineup a high-contact, high-average hitter who can lengthen the order and reduce the team’s strikeout rate. But the cost — likely a package of top prospects — and the defensive fit make the deal far from a certainty.

With multiple teams interested in Arraez, including the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, and others, the Yankees may need to decide quickly whether to prioritize the bat over their other needs. The next few days will determine whether Cashman pulls the trigger on a blockbuster or focuses on smaller upgrades behind the plate and in the bullpen.
