Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan left Thursday’s 3–2 win over the Texas Rangers in the fourth inning because of left mid-back tightness, a setback that arrives just days before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline. The team has been widely reported as one of the clubs pursuing Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, and the status of McClanahan’s back could shift the urgency of that pursuit.

McClanahan began the fourth inning by hitting Ezequiel Duran with his first pitch and walking Brandon Nimmo on six pitches. McClanahan missed the entire 2025 season after surgery on his left triceps during spring training, and he sat out all of 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August 2023. How the injury affects the trade deadline

Tampa Bay entered the deadline with one of the American League’s best starting rotations. Rays starters rank second in the AL with a 3.49 ERA, and the overall staff ERA is 3.69, fourth in the league. Nick Martinez leads the rotation with a 2.45 ERA and a 10–2 record. Drew Rasmussen has a 3.07 ERA with 112 strikeouts in 111⅓ innings, and Griffin Jax holds a 3.74 ERA with 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

McClanahan’s absence, even if short, could increase the Rays’ motivation to add a frontline starter. The club has been among the betting favorites to acquire Tarik Skubal, the Tigers’ left-hander who is widely considered the top trade-deadline prize. Skubal, 29, is under team control through 2027 and has posted a 2.74 ERA with 158 strikeouts across 128 innings this season.

Rays positioned to make a deal

The Rays entered 2026 with MLB.com’s No. 10 ranked minor-league system, giving them the prospect capital to compete for a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber. Any trade would likely require a package centered on young position players or pitching prospects, a move Tampa Bay has made before at past deadlines.

For now, the team will wait for further evaluation of McClanahan’s back before deciding whether to accelerate trade talks. The injury adds a layer of uncertainty to a roster that already had rotation depth but now faces a short-term question mark with one of its key arms.

If McClanahan misses only a start or two, the Rays may still feel comfortable with their current rotation. But if the back issue lingers, the front office could push harder for a Skubal deal to secure a top-tier starter for the playoff stretch.
