Travis Etienne Jr. Eager to Show Jaguars They Let a Star Walk

Travis Etienne Jr. has not tried to hide the extra edge he will bring to the New Orleans Saints’ joint practices with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 27-year-old running back spent his first four NFL seasons in Jacksonville and signed with New Orleans this offseason, and he says the upcoming workouts mean more than a normal training camp tune-up.

“I’m fired up,” Etienne said Friday. “I’m just excited to go out there and put my skills on showcase—and just kind of see the training staff, the coaches and people who helped me get to this position.”

Why This Matchup Carries Extra Weight

Etienne’s departure from Jacksonville was followed quickly by a major commitment from the Saints. New Orleans signed the 2021 first-round pick to a four-year contract worth $48 million, making him one of the team’s most important offseason additions.

Still, the veteran back is not treating the reunion as a simple friendly gathering. He made it clear he wants to remind the Jaguars of what they chose to let go.

“I’m also excited just to go out there and show them what they’re missing out on,” Etienne said. “It’s kind of a two-way sword. I’m excited for that moment.”

The joint practices are scheduled for Aug. 13 in Metairie, giving Etienne an early chance to compete against the defense that once practiced against him every day.

What Etienne Produced in Jacksonville

The Jaguars’ decision to move on came after one of Etienne’s most productive seasons. In 17 games last season, he recorded 1,399 yards from scrimmage and 13 total touchdowns. Etienne also reached the playoffs twice during his time in Jacksonville, though the team advanced past the Wild Card round only once. Those results did not diminish the role the franchise played in his development, he said.

“I feel like my time in Jacksonville was very pivotal to my career,” Etienne added. “They helped me develop into the player that I am.”

Despite that gratitude, the business side of football left him with a clear source of motivation. According to the original Saints Wire report via Yahoo Sports, Jacksonville either did not offer Etienne a lucrative enough contract or did not make an offer at all.

What to Watch in the Joint Practices
