The Carolina Panthers improved to a 2-1 preseason record with a 34-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium on Friday night. While the result itself carries no weight in the standings, the game provided critical evaluation reps for players on the roster bubble. Several individuals used the opportunity to strengthen their cases for a spot on the 53-man roster or a role in Week 1.

Here are six Panthers who improved their stock during the win.

Key facts

Player Position Key Stat Context
Trevor Etienne Running Back 24 rush yards, 49 return yards Showed versatility as a runner and returner in a thin running back room
Mike Dillon Running Back 16 rush yards, 1 TD, 11 rec yards Brought power running and short-yardage reliability
John Metchie III Wide Receiver 6 catches, 77 yards Dominated the second half with backup QB Kenny Pickett
Cam Jones Outside Linebacker 1 sack Stepped up with Nic Scourton out for the season with a torn ACL

Etienne and Dillon make cases in crowded backfield

The Panthers’ running back competition has been quiet for most of the preseason, but Friday night offered a clearer picture. Second-year back Trevor Etienne finally got extended work, showing value beyond the backfield. He returned a punt for 15 yards and a kickoff for 34, while also rushing for 24 yards on five carries in the first half. His special teams ability could give him an edge over veteran Mike Dillon if the team decides to keep only three running backs behind Chuba Hubbard and Jonathon Brooks.

Dillon, 28, countered with a power element that no other back on the roster provides. He rushed for 16 tough yards and a touchdown on five carries, and added an 11-yard reception. If the Panthers value short-yardage reliability, Dillon’s physical style may force them to carry a fourth running back.

Metchie and Horn shine in wide receiver battle

Wide receiver Jaycee Horn, a fan favorite, helped his cause at the back end of the depth chart. He started with a 29-yard kickoff return, later broke off a 39-yard run from scrimmage, and added a 15-yard reception. His versatility as a returner and gadget player could secure him a roster spot.

In the second half, the Panthers’ passing game became a two-man show between backup quarterback Kenny Pickett and John Metchie III. The duo connected multiple times, with Metchie catching six of seven targets for a game-high 77 receiving yards. Metchie’s performance demonstrated chemistry with Pickett and provided a reliable target in the intermediate passing game.

Jones steps up with Scourton out for season

Outside linebacker Cam Jones was limited to just four games in 2025 due to a back injury. With fellow outside linebacker Nic Scourton out for the 2026 season with a torn ACL, Jones has a clear path to increased playing time. Against the Jaguars, he recorded a sack of quarterback Nick Mullens, showing the disruption he can create. His performance Friday suggests he could be a regular in the starting lineup if he stays healthy.

Smith-Wade bounces back after early mistake

Third-year nickel corner Chau Smith-Wade had a difficult moment early in the second quarter when running back Ameer Abdullah juked him badly on a 23-yard gain. However, Smith-Wade responded later with an impressive interception, jumping a pass from quarterback Carter Bradley. He remains in a competition with Corey Thornton for the starting slot corner role, and his playmaking ability on that pick will keep him in serious consideration.

What this means for the Panthers

Preseason performances do not guarantee regular-season success, but they shape roster decisions. The Panthers must trim their roster to 53 players within days. The performances of Etienne, Dillon, Metchie, Horn, Jones, and Smith-Wade provide the coaching staff with difficult decisions at several position groups. For the fans, these players represent depth and upside that could pay off during the long season.
