Finding value in Fantasy Premier League often means looking beyond the most popular picks. With several midfielders performing well while carrying low ownership, managers hunting for differentials have credible options to consider ahead of Gameweek Four and the coming fixtures.

Abdul Rehman, writing for The Athletic, has identified five midfielders who offer strong underlying numbers, favorable schedules or price value without the widespread ownership that limits rank gains. Each player sits below 10 percent ownership at the time of analysis, making them viable options for managers seeking to differentiate their squads.

Key facts

Player Club Price Ownership (approx.) Notable stats
Morgan Gibbs-White Nottingham Forest £6.5m Under 10% 188 FPL points last season, third-highest scoring midfielder
Harvey Barnes Newcastle United £6.0m Low Goal and assist in Gameweek Three, 12-point return
Bradley Barcola Liverpool Undisclosed (high fee) Under 2% 14 goals, 10 assists in 2024-25 Ligue 1 season

Morgan Gibbs-White: The established talisman

Gibbs-White finished last season as the third-highest-scoring midfielder in FPL with 188 points, registering 15 goals and four assists. Despite that output, his ownership remains surprisingly low for a player who is Nottingham Forest’s captain, primary creator and penalty taker.

He has already scored and assisted in the opening three gameweeks, including taking a spot kick against Liverpool. Forest have no European commitments this season, which should mean consistent minutes and fewer rotation risks. Their next five fixtures include trips to Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Ipswich, plus a home match against Coventry — all games where Forest can reasonably expect attacking returns.

Harvey Barnes: Minutes and fixtures aligning

Barnes produced a goal and an assist against Bournemouth in Gameweek Three, banking a 12-point haul. He has played close to full minutes in all three league matches so far under new coach Matthias Jassle, suggesting he is first-choice on the left wing.

Newcastle’s upcoming schedule is favorable, with matches against Leeds (A), Hull (H), Coventry (A), Aston Villa (H), Crystal Palace (A), Everton (H) and Fulham (A) in the next seven gameweeks. The team has scored six goals in three games under Jassle. At £6.0 million, Barnes offers explosive potential if he maintains his starting role, though the arrival of Matias Fernandez-Pardo may affect minutes later in the season.

Marcus Tavernier: Bournemouth’s consistent creator

Tavernier has scored twice already this season despite facing Manchester City and Newcastle away. He is Bournemouth’s most nailed-on attacker, with set-piece duties and some penalty share adding to his appeal.

Bournemouth’s fixture list improves significantly. Over the next 11 matches, they face Brentford (H), Liverpool (H), Sunderland (H), Leeds (H), Ipswich (A), Nottingham Forest (H), Brighton (H) and Hull (H). Tavernier, owned by just 3.3 percent of managers, could serve as a set-and-forget midfield option through that run.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall: Points potential at Everton

Dewsbury-Hall has started all three league games for Everton, playing 90 minutes each time. He scored eight goals and provided seven assists last season, and has already registered multiple defensive contributions (DEFCON points) in his first two outings.

Everton face Tottenham (A), Ipswich (H) and Hull (A) in their next three matches — a favorable stretch for a midfielder who combines goal threat with defensive work. His 4.5 percent ownership makes him a genuine differential, though managers should plan for tougher fixtures against Chelsea and Arsenal in Gameweeks Seven and Eight.

Bradley Barcola: The high-upside newcomer

Barcola arrived at Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain for a significant fee at the end of August. The 24-year-old France winger scored 14 goals and added 10 assists in 27 Ligue 1 starts during the 2024-25 season.

His immediate pathway to minutes may have improved after Cody Gakpo suffered a thigh injury, missing Liverpool’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid. Manager Andoni Iraola said he “doesn’t know” if Gakpo will be available for Gameweek Four against Fulham. Barcola played 60 minutes against Atletico before being substituted due to cramp, which Iraola described as not serious.

Barcola can play on either flank and offers explosive potential. His ownership sits below two percent, making him the highest-risk, highest-reward option on this list.

What this means for FPL managers

Differential picks carry inherent risk — low ownership often reflects uncertainty about minutes, form or fixtures. Each of these five players has a credible case for consistent returns, but managers should monitor team news closely, particularly regarding Barnes’ competition for minutes and Barcola’s role once Gakpo returns.

The upcoming international break and early-season rotation patterns mean that even the most promising differential can lose value quickly. Treating these players as watchlist additions rather than must-buy transfers allows managers to react to developing information.
