Dilip Vengsarkar Slams Selectors for Snubbing Ranji’s Top Bowler Auqib Nabi

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has launched a scathing attack on the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, condemning their decision to overlook Jammu & Kashmir's Auqib Nabi for the upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan. Nabi concluded the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season as the tournament's leading wicket-taker, claiming an extraordinary 60 wickets in 10 matches at an impressive average of 12.56. His instrumental role in guiding J&K to their maiden Ranji Trophy title also earned him the Player of the Tournament award.

Vengsarkar's Outrage

The legendary cricketer expressed his disbelief and anger at Nabi's exclusion, openly questioning the selectors' rationale. "The selectors’ decision to ignore him is absolutely absurd and baffling," Vengsarkar stated, as reported by Yahoo Sports. "What kind of selection is this? It is just not acceptable. It is injustice." He emphasized the significance of Nabi's achievement, highlighting that 60 wickets in a domestic season should unequivocally warrant national selection. Vengsarkar further articulated Nabi's potential plight, adding, "Can you imagine Nabi’s plight right now? He took 60 wickets in the Ranji Trophy. He has worked hard for it and deserves a place ahead of everybody else."

Questioning Domestic Cricket's Value

Vengsarkar went further, questioning the very foundation and purpose of domestic cricket if such outstanding performances are consistently disregarded. "If domestic cricket performances are not a criterion, then the BCCI should scrap domestic cricket," he thundered. This powerful sentiment underscores a growing concern among former players and fans alike regarding the recognition and value attributed to performances in India's premier first-class competition, the Ranji Trophy.

Pace vs. Wicket-Taking Ability

Reports suggest that a significant factor in Nabi's omission is due to concerns over his pace. However, Vengsarkar vehemently dismissed this reasoning, arguing that a bowler's primary attribute should be their ability to take wickets, irrespective of raw speed. "You pick a bowler for his ability to get wickets. He may bowl at 130 kmph, but the important thing is his wicket-taking ability. This kid has shown tremendous consistency in getting wickets," Vengsarkar stressed. He also pointed out that Nabi's consistent wicket-taking form should have been rewarded, especially given that star pacer Jasprit Bumrah was being rested for the Afghanistan Test, presenting a clear opportunity for a new talent. Nabi had also claimed 44 wickets at an average of 13.27 in the previous Ranji season, yet was overlooked then too.

Missed Opportunity for Development

Vengsarkar believes the one-off Test against Afghanistan presented an ideal, low-pressure opportunity to introduce Nabi to international cricket and begin his grooming process. "This was the ideal time to groom him. When a player is in form, you give him the opportunity then and there. You don’t wait until he loses confidence, fitness or hunger," he explained, advocating for timely opportunities for in-form domestic players to transition to higher levels.

Support from Other Cricketers

Vengsarkar is not alone in his criticism of the selection committee's decision. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan had also voiced his displeasure earlier in the week, posting on X (formerly Twitter): "Do not discourage Ranji Trophy performances!" Former Mumbai captain Shishir Hattangadi echoed these sentiments, stating, "Nabi’s exclusion is baffling. If Ranji Trophy is the yardstick, then honour it by recognising performances. You cannot ignore someone who has been so consistent in red-ball cricket."

Selectors' Perspective

During a press conference, chief selector Ajit Agarkar acknowledged that Nabi's performances were indeed discussed by the committee. However, the selectors ultimately opted for Punjab and Gujarat Titans pacer Gurnoor Brar, who received his maiden call-up for both the Test and ODI squads. A source close to the selection process defended the decision, questioning the sole reliance on statistics alone. The source reportedly questioned, "There is a highest run-getter and wicket-taker every Ranji season. Should selectors simply be replaced by stats analysts then?" The source also highlighted Brar's performances for India A and his 11 wickets in eight Vijay Hazare Trophy matches for Punjab as contributing factors to his selection, suggesting a broader evaluation criterion beyond just Ranji Trophy statistics.
