Milwaukee proved its offensive prowess was no fluke as they defeated UCF 13-6 in the Auburn Regional. The Horizon League champions capitalized on pitching struggles and delivered timely hitting, including five extra-base hits and five walks in the first three innings, to secure the commanding victory at Plainsman Park.

This loss places UCF in a precarious position, facing an elimination game against host Auburn. Milwaukee, now 27-31 on the season, is one step closer to becoming one of the few No. 4 seeds in a regional to advance to the super regionals. UCF's record drops to 32-22.

Milwaukee's offense set the tone early, scoring the game's first nine runs. This momentum carried over from their opening regional game where they stunned Auburn with a 10-0 lead.

Big Bats Lead the Way

The top of Milwaukee's lineup proved to be a significant challenge for UCF's pitching staff. Leadoff hitter Grant Ross reached base in all five of his plate appearances, highlighted by an unusual solo home run that deflected off UCF center fielder De'Amez Ross. Charlie Marion also contributed significantly, singling twice, walking twice, getting hit by a pitch, and scoring twice. Dylan O'Connell was a force at the plate, smacking doubles in his first two at-bats and driving in four runs.

Pitching Woes for UCF

UCF's pitching struggled from the outset. Starter Mateo Gray was chased after just 1⅓ innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs on only 13 strikes out of 27 pitches. The Knights were forced to utilize five different bullpen arms, a situation that could prove taxing for the remainder of the weekend.

Regional Upset for the Ages

Milwaukee's victory marks a significant upset, as they now sit in the driver's seat to advance. Their win puts them in a strong position to become just the 10th No. 4 seed in NCAA tournament history to reach the super regionals. Andrew Williamson added to Milwaukee's offensive showcase with a 443-foot home run in the sixth inning. Evan Jones provided a glimmer of hope for UCF with 4⅓ innings of two-run relief, a career-high for the pitcher.

Umpire Injury Causes Delay

Play was temporarily halted for 20 minutes in the second inning when home plate umpire Blake Felix was struck in the face mask by a foul ball. Felix, visibly shaken, was evaluated by medical staff and did not return, replaced by second base umpire Travis Carlson.

What's Next for UCF

The Knights now face an uphill battle. They must defeat the No. 4 ranked Auburn Tigers in an elimination game on Sunday afternoon. The winner of that contest will then have to face Milwaukee twice to advance to the super regionals. UCF holds a 5-6 all-time record against Auburn, though they swept a series in 2020. Auburn, meanwhile, is coming off a 17-13 slugfest victory over NC State.
