The Washington Nationals promoted infielder Abimelec Ortiz for his Major League Baseball debut in the final game before the All-Star break. Ortiz, 24, joined the Nationals for their matchup against the New York Yankees, entering the game as the designated hitter.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Ortiz, the Nationals designated left-handed pitcher Matt Krook for assignment. Ortiz was acquired by the Nationals from the Texas Rangers as part of the trade package that sent starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore to the Rangers.

Ortiz’s MLB debut came after a strong performance in the minor leagues with Triple-A Rochester. He was among the top performers in the International League, ranking tied for second in doubles with 17 and holding sole possession of second place in RBIs with 59. He also contributed 16 home runs and 33 extra-base hits in 71 games, while batting .239. Ortiz had a notable stretch in May, hitting home runs in four consecutive games from May 22-27.

First Big League Hit

Ortiz’s first official at-bat resulted in grounding into a double play in the first inning. However, in the fourth inning, he notched his first career hit, a double off a seven-pitch at-bat. He advanced to third base on a single by CJ Abrams, but the inning ended without further advancement.

Manager Blake Butera later turned to Curtis Mead as a pinch hitter for Ortiz in the sixth inning. The move proved effective, as Mead hit a solo home run to tie the game at two runs apiece.

Post-Debut Transaction

Following the game, the Nationals announced that Ortiz would be sent back down to Rochester. Matt Krook also saw his time with the organization conclude. Krook, 31, had been claimed off waivers from the Athletics just a week prior as the Nationals managed several pitching injuries.

During his brief stint with the Nationals, Krook made three appearances, allowing no earned runs in his first and last outings over a combined 2.1 innings. However, a critical moment came in the top of the ninth inning with the Nationals leading 3-2. Krook surrendered a go-ahead two-run home run to Jazz Chisholm Jr., contributing to the eventual 5-3 loss to the Yankees. This late-inning collapse was one of two the bullpen experienced during the series. Krook had joined the Nationals seeking a fresh start after finishing his second season with the Athletics with a 17.18 ERA and a 2.73 WHIP.

All-Star Break Approaching

The Nationals will now head into the All-Star break with three players selected to participate in the Midsummer Classic, including Foster Griffin, who received a late call-up.
