Algeria secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over debutants Jordan in the FIFA World Cup, effectively ending the Middle Eastern nation’s maiden tournament appearance. The win keeps Algeria’s own knockout stage hopes alive after a hard-fought contest in San Francisco.

Jordan, in their first-ever World Cup, showed commendable organization in defense against an Algerian side that dominated possession for large spells of the match. The underdogs even managed to take a first-half lead against the run of play.

Jordan’s Breakthrough

The deadlock was broken in the 36th minute. Ramiz Zerrouki of Algeria conceded possession cheaply, and Jordan’s Nizar Al Rashdan seized the opportunity. Al Rashdan expertly curled the ball home with the outside of his right foot, sending the Jordanian contingent into raptures and giving his side a historic lead. This goal marked Jordan’s first-ever point in a World Cup, though it would ultimately not be enough.

Algeria’s Second-Half Surge

Following the break, Algeria intensified their pressure. Yazeed Abulaila in the Jordan goal was called into action, parrying a fierce 25-yard shot from Ibrahim Maza and later saving a header from Nadhir Benbouali. At the other end, Noor Al Rawabdeh of Jordan came close to extending their lead, curling a shot inches wide from the edge of the box.

The sustained Algerian pressure eventually paid off. In the 69th minute, Riyad Mahrez, making his first World Cup start since 2014, delivered an inswinging corner that Benbouali met with a glancing downward header into the corner of the net, leveling the score.

The decisive moment arrived in the 82nd minute. Another Algerian corner caused confusion in the Jordan defense, and the ball broke to Amine Gouiri. Gouiri reacted quickly, hooking a bouncing ball past the despairing dive of Abulaila to secure a crucial winner for Algeria.

Looking Ahead

With this result, Algeria, currently third in Group J, will face second-placed Austria in Kansas City on Sunday. Jordan, meanwhile, will play Group J winners Argentina in Dallas at the same time, aiming to end their World Cup debut on a positive note.
