Chaz Oberkfell Achieves Triple Crown as Auburn Repeats in 4×400 at State Track Meet
Gillespie's Chaz Oberkfell secured a historic triple crown in distance events, while Auburn's 4x400 relay team defended its title with a record-breaking performance at the Illinois High School Association Class 1A Boys State Track Meet.

Gillespie senior Chaz Oberkfell etched his name in the record books by capturing a triple crown in distance races at the Illinois High School Association Class 1A Boys State Track Meet. Meanwhile, the Auburn High School 4×400-meter relay team continued its legacy by securing a second consecutive state championship with a new meet record.
Oberkfell's historic performance saw him claim state titles in the one-mile, two-mile, and three-mile races. His victory in the 3,200-meter run was somewhat anticlimactic, as he won his heat in 9 minutes, 8.17 seconds and then had to wait over an hour to see if any other competitors could surpass his time. Toulon Stark County sophomore Evan Knobloch ultimately finished his heat in 9:32.06, confirming Oberkfell's state championship.

"It feels really good," Oberkfell said. "A lot of pressure lifted off for sure. I mean, just coming in today knowing I had this opportunity is just amazing."
The 1,600-meter run provided a more dramatic finish, with Oberkfell narrowly edging out Sullivan's Johnathan Iacobazzi by a mere 0.07 seconds, crossing the finish line in 4:14.66.

"That was very competitive," Oberkfell commented. "I just want to thank God (that) He gave me the legs there for that last lap. I mean, after that 800 I was feeling it and just coming back for it, I was a little nervous. I got to the last 100 (meters) whenever I saw he was slightly in front of me, I'm like, I got to go."
Oberkfell also placed eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.66, rounding out his impressive showing.
Auburn's 4×400 relay team, anchored by Jacob Barth, successfully defended their Class 1A state title, setting a new meet record with a time of 3:17.79, finishing more than five seconds ahead of second-place Forreston.
"Just proving that it wasn't an accident that we won last year, that we didn't care what anybody else did or had to say," Barth stated. "We just went out and did our own thing and showed that we belonged here."
The relay team consisted of Hunter Piper on the opening leg, James Baisden on the second, Sam Talavera on the third, and Barth anchoring. This lineup, despite a change from last year with Talavera stepping in for the graduated Carter Hunley, maintained Auburn's dominance.
"We don't really feel too much pressure, but we knew we had a target on our back for sure," Piper said. "We felt really good, especially this year's prelims compared to last year's, not fumbling the baton and all that, and getting a good time to start, we definitely felt confident."
Baisden added that the team's increased training and experience contributed to their success under pressure. "I wouldn't say (this title was) easier, but we were up to the level of competition needed to succeed," he said. "We had worked way harder than we had last year, and it just paid off."
Following their victory, the Auburn team had a celebratory meal planned. "Before we head back home, we're all getting the steak and shrimp combo (at the Stadium Grill in Mattoon)," Barth shared, "and we can finally have a soda (now that) the season's over." Barth also secured a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.74.
Other notable performances included Chatham Glenwood's contingent, which earned a third-place team trophy. McKenzie Doe III took second in the Class 2A high jump, and Larry Wills finished third in the same event. Both cleared 6-feet, 7-inches, with Doe earning a higher placement due to fewer misses. Wills also added a second-place finish in the long jump.
Pleasant Plains finished second overall in the Class 1A team standings with 34 points, while Auburn was seventh with 25 points, and Gillespie was eighth with 22 points, largely contributed by Oberkfell's efforts. Elijah Teefey of Pleasant Plains secured third place in the 3,200-meter run.
In Class 2A, Taylorville junior Liam Bettis earned a second-place finish in the 1,600-run and seventh in the 3,200-run. Southeast's Kamri Sales captured second in the 2A triple jump.
