Colombia has punched its ticket to the World Cup knockout stage, thanks to a crucial 1-0 victory over Congo DR on Tuesday night. The decisive moment came in the 76th minute when Daniel Muñoz found the back of the net, breaking through a determined Congo DR defense.

Muñoz’s goal was his second of the tournament, and it came after Congo DR goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi put on an impressive display, thwarting numerous Colombian attacks in the early stages of the match. Mpasi made five saves in the first 20 minutes alone, keeping his side in the game.

Despite the late pressure from Congo DR, who twice threatened to equalize in stoppage time, Colombia held on for the win. Goalkeeper Camilo Vargas was instrumental in preserving the clean sheet, making a vital save from a long-range effort by Nathanael Mbuku and then denying Chancel Mbemba on the ensuing corner.

Colombian star forward Luis Díaz had two goals disallowed in the closing moments of the second half. One was ruled out for a foul in the 79th minute, and another for offside just a minute later.

Congo DR, making their first World Cup appearance in 52 years, had drawn their opening match 1-1 against Portugal. Their World Cup journey began with a surprising result against a Cristiano Ronaldo-led side.

Group K Standings

Colombia currently leads Group K with six points from their two matches. They sit two points ahead of Portugal and five points clear of Congo DR. Portugal secured a dominant 5-0 win over Uzbekistan earlier in the day, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice.

Colombia’s path to the knockout stage now hinges on their final group match against Portugal. A draw in that game would be sufficient for Colombia to win the group. Portugal would also advance to the knockout stage with a draw.

World Cup Aspirations

Colombia, ranked 11th in the world and third among South American teams behind Brazil and Argentina, missed out on the 2022 World Cup. Their tournament campaign started with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan.

Congo DR, ranked 47th, faced challenges in their World Cup preparations, including an Ebola outbreak that impacted their ability to travel and prepare. Restrictions related to Ebola prevented many fans from supporting their team.

One notable fan, Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, known for his statue impersonation of Congo’s independence hero Patrice Lumumba during the Africa Cup of Nations, was present at the match in Guadalajara. He maintained his statue pose throughout the game.

Historical Note

Colombia’s victory marked a departure from their World Cup history, as they had never been involved in a scoreless draw in their 23 previous World Cup appearances. Playmaker James Rodríguez also reached a personal milestone, joining Colombian legends Freddy Rincón and Carlos Valderrama with 10 World Cup appearances.
