Hamilton Frustrated With Ferrari Strategy After Dropping Points in Hungarian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton expressed frustration with his Ferrari team after a strategic misstep and a pit-lane speeding penalty cost him crucial points in the Formula 1 world championship battle against Mercedes’s Kimi Antonelli. The seven-time world champion finished fifth at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, while Lando Norris gave McLaren its first win of the season.

Hamilton had been running fourth on track but received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane during a late-race stop under the virtual safety car. That penalty dropped him to fifth in the final classification, behind team-mate Charles Leclerc, who finished fourth. The result extended Hamilton’s deficit to Antonelli from 45 points to 50 points as the sport enters its annual summer break.

Strategy call under scrutiny

The decisive moment came when Ferrari called Hamilton into the pits for fresh tyres just before the pit-lane entry under the virtual safety car. Hamilton had no time to debate the call and was forced to comply. The stop gave him new rubber but cost him track position to Max Verstappen and Antonelli, and he could not recover.

“It was pretty bad. Pretty frustrating,” Hamilton said. “I definitely don’t think we should have taken the stop but the call came literally just before the pit-lane entry and I didn’t have time to debate. I would never have stopped if it meant that I was giving up track position. I may have been able to hold on to P2. He [Verstappen] was catching me but most likely it would have been P3 [in front of Antonelli] and it would have been much better. Instead, I lost a bunch of points.”

Penalty adds to recent run of bad luck

The pit-lane speeding penalty was the latest in a series of sanctions Hamilton has received in recent races, including penalties at Silverstone and Spa, and a three-place grid drop in Hungary for impeding during qualifying. The Briton acknowledged the summer break has come at a good time.

“I’ll work hard to try and come back, reset,” he said. “There’s still a lot of places to take. I’m going to try and make sure I don’t give them any reason to give any penalties moving forwards.”

Norris takes first win of 2026

Lando Norris, the defending world champion, returned to form with a dominant victory at the Hungaroring. He finished 15 seconds ahead of Verstappen and said he felt he was driving at his best, even better than during his title-winning campaign last year.

“Today I would probably say it was up there with one of my best performances, in terms of extracting performance out of the car and being so close to the limit every single lap,” Norris said. “So close that the team had to ask me to peg it back a little bit. So although it kind of hurts me saying it because it doesn’t mean that you just win, I feel like I’m doing a better job this year than I was last year.”

Norris is 91 points behind Antonelli in the championship with 12 races remaining, but after McLaren’s significant upgrades proved effective in Hungary, he believes the team can fight back.
