Jaccob Slavin Achieves Rare Feat, Joins Elite Club with Stanley Cup and Olympic Gold in Same Year
Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin has etched his name in hockey history, becoming only the second American to win both an Olympic gold medal and the Stanley Cup in the same calendar year.

Jaccob Slavin has joined an exceptionally small circle of athletes after his Stanley Cup victory with the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday night. The defenseman is now the second American and the eighth player in history to win both an Olympic gold medal and the NHL’s championship trophy in the same year.
This remarkable achievement places Slavin in the company of legends, with Ken Morrow being the only other American to have accomplished this feat. Morrow was part of the “Miracle on Ice” 1980 U.S. Olympic team and subsequently won the first of four consecutive Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders that same year.
Por que importa
Morrow reflected on his unique status prior to Slavin’s accomplishment, telling the Associated Press, “I used to joke I was a trivia question for a lot of years: Who’s the only guy that ever did that? Only player I was at that time, not just American, but the only player.”
The list of players who have achieved this dual triumph includes several notable Canadian stars. Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan accomplished it with the Detroit Red Wings in 2002. In 2010, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, and Brent Seabrook of the Chicago Blackhawks all achieved the same milestone. Most recently, Drew Doughty did so with the Los Angeles Kings in 2014.
William Carrier, a member of the Vegas Golden Knights, also experienced the highs and lows of the Stanley Cup Final. He was part of the inaugural Golden Knights team that lost in the 2018 Final. Three years later, Carrier was part of the Carolina Hurricanes’ victory, celebrating in the same arena where his team had previously fallen short. Reflecting on his second Cup win, Carrier noted the difference in his perspective: “I’m going to enjoy this one with the family a lot more.”
The Hurricanes’ journey to the championship was also marked by personal milestones and emotional moments for other players. Goaltender Frederik Andersen, who played significant minutes in the Eastern Conference Final and early in the Stanley Cup Final, dedicated his win to his late agent, Claude Lemieux, who passed away by suicide on May 28 at the age of 60. Lemieux, a three-time Cup winner as a player, had been a significant influence on Andersen. “He would be so proud and all that,” Andersen said. “It’s tough to really describe how much he has meant to me, and how cool it is to have my name on that trophy with him.”
For Carolina’s right wing Jackson Blake, the Stanley Cup victory was a deeply emotional experience shared with his father, Jason Blake, a former NHL player who never won the Cup himself. “He’s been my right-hand man through it all,” Jackson Blake said, visibly emotional. “For him to be here and my whole family to be here, so special. I have no words.”
