Josh Kerr has rewritten the record books, smashing the mile world record with a blistering time of 3:42.66 at a meet in London on July 18. The British middle-distance star surpassed Hicham El Guerrouj’s 25-year-old mark of 3:43.16, marking a monumental achievement for Kerr and British athletics.

The historic run was the culmination of “Project 222,” a meticulously planned endeavor that Kerr pitched to his sponsor, Brooks, eight months prior. This project, named after the number of seconds in his target time, represented a significant gamble, akin to going “all-in” on a difficult hand in poker, a sport Kerr is known to enjoy.

Intense Preparation

Kerr’s journey to the record was far from easy. Just four weeks after finishing the 1,500m World Championship final with a calf injury, he embarked on Project 222. This demanding preparation involved intense training regimens, including 70-mile weeks and countless 55-second laps, all aimed at creating the conditions where a world record would become “inevitable.”

Altitude training played a pivotal role, with Kerr spending the final five weeks leading up to the race at an altitude of 1,626 meters (5,335 feet) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His parents relocated to live with him, with his mother, Jill, providing crucial physiotherapy support.

Technological Edge

Brooks played an instrumental role in Kerr’s success by crafting bespoke equipment. This included a custom-designed spike designed to complement Kerr’s specific running mechanics and allow him to sustain 55-second laps. The development process involved rigorous VO2-max testing, perception trials, and treadmill sessions wearing the race-day spikes. Additionally, Kerr utilized an aerodynamically tested speed suit.

Teamwork and Pace

The race itself relied heavily on the support of pacemakers. Brandon Kidder, a fellow Brooks Beasts athlete, played a key role, pacing Kerr through the initial stages. Kidder, who had also served as a pacemaker in training sessions, aimed to push Kerr beyond the 800-meter mark. Despite a slightly fast opening lap, Kidder’s efforts were crucial in setting the required pace. Zan Rudolf stepped in as a late replacement, guiding Kerr through the kilometer mark in 2:18.7s.

Coach Danny Mackey, who has guided Kerr since he turned professional in 2018, watched from the stands, expressing both concern and unwavering faith in his athlete. Mackey noted that Kerr’s top-end speed had reached unprecedented levels, a return to the “final form” that was hindered by injury in the previous season.

A Calculated Risk

Kerr’s decision to publicize his record attempt in March was a calculated move, reflecting his comfort with high-pressure situations. While Mackey might have preferred to stage the record attempt in a more controlled environment like Monaco or California, Kerr’s desire to achieve it on home soil in front of a supportive crowd was a key factor. Mild crosswinds on race day meant conditions were not perfect, but Kerr was willing to take the risk.
