Rookie McGonigle Lives Out Childhood Dream Meeting Hero Utley at All-Star Game
Tigers' first-time All-Star Kevin McGonigle experienced a full-circle moment meeting his childhood idol, Chase Utley, at Citizens Bank Park.

Tigers’ First-Time All-Star Meets Childhood Idol
Citizens Bank Park buzzed with the energy of the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, but for Detroit Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle, a personal moment overshadowed the Midsummer Classic itself. The 21-year-old, a native of Philadelphia’s suburbs, found himself star-struck during American League batting practice, not by his fellow All-Stars, but by the prospect of meeting his childhood hero, Chase Utley.
“I saw him, and I had to go up and talk to him and just thank him,” McGonigle said, his voice filled with a sense of awe. “I know he thinks he hasn’t done much, but growing up watching him, studying the way he played, I tried to model my game around him. It was really special meeting him; I just wanted to thank him for helping me to get where I am today.”
McGonigle acknowledged that the kid within him always emerges when he encounters players he admired during his own formative years. This encounter with Utley, the former Phillies star, was no different. Initially, he considered maintaining a more professional demeanor, but ultimately embraced the pure joy of the moment.
“I kind of stepped back and thought, ‘Maybe I should act more professional; I’m in the Major Leagues now,’” McGonigle reflected. “But I think that’s the beauty, and the best thing about this game: it’s a kid’s game. The way I played as a kid and the work I put in as a kid got me to where I am today. I want to keep acting that way.”
A Pre-Game Connection
The meeting wasn’t entirely spontaneous. McGonigle revealed that Utley had reached out to him with a congratulatory text message upon his All-Star selection. Though they had never communicated before, McGonigle was certain of the sender’s identity and responded promptly.
“He reached out to me saying congrats on everything and he’ll be in town and he’s looking forward to meeting me,” McGonigle shared. “I just assumed it was him right away, and I responded.”
The two chatted briefly before posing for a photograph, a memento McGonigle plans to cherish. This interaction served as a significant highlight of his first All-Star experience, even as the AL secured a 4-0 victory over the NL.
McGonigle’s All-Star Debut
In the game, McGonigle went 0-for-2 after entering as a shortstop in the fifth inning. However, the experience was amplified by the presence of approximately 36 friends and family members in attendance, and the warm reception from the Philadelphia crowd, who recognized him as one of their own.
“It was chills, man,” McGonigle described the atmosphere. “Hearing the stadium get loud like that, the support out of the fans here today was unbelievable. I just can’t thank them enough. Just to be able to experience this whole thing with family and friends was unreal.”
