The latest MLB Hitter Power Rankings reveal a striking trend: left-handed batters are currently dominating the league’s offensive output. Nine of the top 10 hitters featured in the poll conducted by MLB.com experts swing from the left side, underscoring a significant shift in offensive performance as the season approaches its midpoint.

Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros maintains his No. 1 position in the rankings, showcasing a season that could see him contend for an AL Triple Crown. As of Wednesday, Alvarez led or was tied for the lead in the American League in batting average (.325) and home runs (25), while also ranking second in RBIs (56). His overall offensive prowess is further demonstrated by leading the AL in runs scored (57), hits (94), on-base percentage (.436), slugging percentage (.640), total bases (185), and intentional walks (12). This year is shaping up to be a career-defining season for the Astros’ slugger.

Por que importa

Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers holds steady at No. 2. While Ohtani has consistently posted strong OPS figures, his performance in June has been particularly noteworthy. In his first 18 games of the month, he hit .333 with a .456 OBP and a .746 SLG, including seven home runs. This surge comes as he also establishes himself as an NL Cy Young candidate on the mound.

Rounding out the top three is Nick Kurtz of the Oakland Athletics. Kurtz has made a seamless transition to Major League pitching, hitting .289 with a .405 OBP and a .590 SLG through his first 195 career games. He currently leads the Majors with 61 RBIs and 72 walks, positioning the 23-year-old as a potential AL MVP candidate, especially with Aaron Judge sidelined.

Contexto

Notable climbers and returnees to the rankings include Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies, who has been a consistent power threat since 2022 and is nearing 400 career home runs. Juan Soto of the New York Mets, despite a relatively quieter season compared to his debut, continues to post strong numbers with an OBP around .400 and an OPS well over .900.

Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Chicago Cubs has made a dramatic ascent into the rankings after a slow start to the season. Since May 30, he has been on a tear, batting .446/.500/.952 with 11 home runs in 20 games, combining his elite defense and baserunning with a revitalized bat.

Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins also makes a return to the rankings, tied with Alvarez for the AL lead in home runs with 25. Despite injury concerns that have historically plagued him, Buxton is proving to be a significant offensive difference-maker when healthy.

The rankings also feature Ben Rice of the New York Yankees, who, despite a quieter June, still ranks third in the Majors in OPS (.973). James Wood of the Washington Nationals continues to impress, leading the NL in walks with 61 and showing power with 20 home runs, though questions remain about his ability to sustain performance in the second half. Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks rounds out the top 10, leading MLB with nine triples and contributing significant power and a consistently high slugging percentage.
