Former England fast bowler Liam Plunkett has embarked on a new sporting chapter, trading the familiar turf of cricket for the diamond of professional baseball. Plunkett made his professional baseball debut on Thursday night for the Oakland Ballers of the Pioneer Baseball League.

The transition sees the 41-year-old, a key member of England’s 2019 50-over World Cup-winning squad, now competing in a minor league in the United States, where he emigrated five years ago. His debut came in an away game against the Yuba-Sutter Freebirds.

Debut Performance

Plunkett took to the mound at Raimondi Park in front of 1,878 fans. During his appearance, he threw five pitches and managed to strike out Josh Duarte of the Freebirds. Despite Plunkett’s efforts, the Oakland Ballers ultimately fell to an 18-11 defeat.

This foray into professional baseball marks a significant shift from ceremonial first pitches Plunkett has done in the past for Major League Baseball teams like the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins as an ambassador for Major League Cricket (MLC). He expressed his excitement about the development, telling BBC Sport, “I think I’m the first English cricketer to ever play a professional game of baseball. It’s obviously a few rungs below Major League Baseball but it’s still pretty cool to say I have played as a professional in two bat-and-ball sports.”

A Unique Opportunity

Plunkett’s signing with the Ballers was facilitated under the Pioneer Baseball League’s marketing player exception. This provision allows clubs to sign a player who may not fit standard roster eligibility criteria, often a veteran or former professional, to their active roster. While Plunkett’s appearance is a notable event, it is not expected to signal a permanent career change for the cricketer.

He is currently part of the San Francisco Unicorns squad for MLC but has yet to feature in their games this season. Prior to his debut, Plunkett also experimented with batting during a training session with the Ballers. However, he concluded that pitching was his more suitable skill set.

“The swing path when you bat is so different compared to cricket, especially when someone is pitching at 90mph,” Plunkett explained. “I’d have loved to hit a monster home run because that would have gone viral!”

Career Statistics

Throughout his distinguished cricket career, Liam Plunkett represented England in 13 Test matches, 89 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 22 T20 Internationals. He amassed a total of 201 wickets across all formats for his country. His move to baseball offers a unique intersection of sports, highlighting his adaptability and willingness to explore new athletic challenges.
