Maple Mountain and Spanish Fork both earned crucial victories in the 5A state baseball tournament, avoiding elimination and advancing in the bracket. Maple Mountain defeated Pleasant Grove 10-8, while Spanish Fork overcame West Field 4-2 in extra innings.

Maple Mountain and Spanish Fork have successfully navigated the elimination bracket of the 5A state baseball tournament, securing vital wins to keep their championship aspirations alive. Both teams demonstrated resilience under pressure, with Maple Mountain defeating Pleasant Grove in a high-scoring affair and Spanish Fork grinding out an extra-innings victory against West Field.
Maple Mountain's Offensive Outburst
In a rematch with familiar foe Pleasant Grove, No. 2 seed Maple Mountain showcased an explosive offense, earning a 10-8 victory. This win avenged their previous loss to Pleasant Grove and highlighted their ability to perform when it matters most. Maple Mountain's bats were active from the second inning onward, contributing to their 10-hit performance. Catcher Brooks Pratt was a key contributor, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a walk. Shortstop Lincoln Beenfield also had a strong outing, finishing 2 for 2 with a run scored and a walk, according to Yahoo Sports.
Game Highlights

- Pleasant Grove: 8 | N/A | Eliminated
- Spanish Fork: 4 | Pratt Morley, Trigg Cloward | Victory, advanced
- West Field: 2 | Marshall Moon | Eliminated
Maple Mountain head coach Jeremy Thomas emphasized the team's disciplined approach at the plate. "I felt like we laid off a lot of pitches. We didn’t swing at balls, and we swung at strikes, and then when we did swing, we put barrels on it," Thomas said, as reported by Yahoo Sports. He noted that as the game progressed, their hitters developed a better approach, which ultimately paid off. This sets up a fifth meeting of the season between Maple Mountain and Pleasant Grove, with a spot in the 5A state championship series on the line. Thomas acknowledged Pleasant Grove as a formidable opponent, recognizing the challenge they presented upon entering the 5A division. He expressed confidence in his team's preparation, stating, "We knew in our region play; it was gonna prepare us for situations like this." Thomas also suggested that fatigue might play a role in the upcoming elimination game, emphasizing the importance of pitching, defense, and a clean style of baseball.
Spanish Fork's Extra-Innings Heroics
Top-seeded Spanish Fork faced a tough challenge from No. 4 West Field but ultimately prevailed with a 4-2 victory in extra innings. The win ensured their continued participation in the 5A state tournament. Spanish Fork head coach Hadley Thorpe spoke about the team's commitment to their game plan. "What we preach all of the time is sticking to our gameplan and keep doing what we do well. We stick with our approach throughout the whole game, and it paid off," Thorpe stated, according to Yahoo Sports. While he desired earlier offensive production, Thorpe expressed confidence in his team's ability to find ways to win, particularly when facing adversity.
The game saw West Field's closer Marshall Moon enter in the seventh inning with a 2-1 lead. However, Spanish Fork's Trigg Cloward hit a crucial double to tie the game at 2, forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Spanish Fork continued their offensive pressure against Moon. Pratt Morley delivered an RBI single, and another run was added later in the inning, giving Spanish Fork a lead they would not relinquish.
Morley's Stellar Performance
Pratt Morley not only drove in the game-winning run but also delivered an outstanding performance on the mound in relief. Entering the game in the fourth inning, Morley struck out eight batters and did not allow a single hit, showcasing his dominance under pressure. Coach Thorpe lauded Morley's effort, saying, "Pratt had absolutely incredible stuff. He throws hard in the zone all the time. Yeah, just that’s our guy. In every high leverage spot, we’ve gone to him, so we trust him fully in that spot," as reported by Yahoo Sports.
Last year, Spanish Fork surprised many with a Cinderella run to the state title as a No. 20 seed. As the top-ranked team this year, they are no longer an underdog. However, Thorpe has cultivated an "us against the world" mentality within his team, which appears to be serving them well. "We have a lot of holdovers from last year and doing it as the 20 seed, and we kind of took that mindset today that it was us against the world again in this spot. So it was comfortable for us today. This group wouldn’t do it the easy way, so they tried to do it the hard way every time," Thorpe elaborated.
The victories for Maple Mountain and Spanish Fork are significant for their respective programs, allowing them to continue their quest for the 5A state championship. Both teams demonstrated the grit and determination required in high-stakes elimination games, setting the stage for further intense competition in the tournament.
