Texas Tech's ace pitcher, NiJaree Canady, delivered a performance reminiscent of her dominant form from last season, leading the Red Raiders to the Women's College World Series championship series. In a crucial winner-take-all game against No. 1 Alabama, Canady pitched her first complete game of the NCAA tournament, showcasing the form head coach Gerry Glasco has been waiting for.

Glasco described the outing as "the 2025 version of NiJa Canady," expressing confidence in her ability to peak at the right moment. The Red Raiders secured their spot in the finals after a demanding day that included forcing a decisive Game 2 against Alabama with a 5-4 victory, handing the Crimson Tide their first loss of the WCWS.

Por que importa

"We've been on this plan," Glasco stated. "We took the whole fall off, and we said we'll peak in May and peak at the World Series. I don't have any doubt that was her best performance of the year, and that's a great confidence builder for our team and NiJa to go into the finals with that effort."

Canady's outing saw her allow just two hits, one walk, and record six strikeouts. This performance marked a significant turnaround from earlier in the postseason, where she hadn't been as consistently dominant, leading Glasco to frequently swap pitchers.

In the first game of the day, Glasco started junior Kaitlyn Terry before bringing in Canady in the second inning. When Canady gave up an inning-opening home run in the fourth that tied the game, Glasco had a tense conversation with her in the dugout. He emphasized the importance of trusting the pitching coach's calls.

"I just let her know, I'm paying a pitching coach a lot of money to call pitches," Glasco explained. "If you shake it off, it better work. If it don't, you own it. You take accountability. We're in a close game." Canady initially shook off a pitch call, opting for a change-up that bounced, a move Glasco deemed too risky at the time. However, she later successfully executed a change-up for a strikeout, earning a chuckle from Glasco.

"That's the greatness of NiJa," Glasco remarked. "I tore her up about it, I'm getting on her, and she still had the courage to do it a couple times in the game, and I don't mind that at all. I don't think you need to shake off 10. If you shake off 10 times, I need to get a different pitching coach. Two times, then maybe that's a great thing.”

The momentum shifted in the bottom of the fifth in Game 1 when Texas Tech's Taylor Pannell hit a crucial extra-base hit that scored the go-ahead run. Canady then pitched the final two outs of the first game, setting the stage for Mia Williams' season-saving home run.

Canady and Alabama's Jocelyn Briski, who had been outstanding throughout the tournament, engaged in a pitching duel in the second game, with Canady ultimately emerging victorious. This outcome was particularly noteworthy given Briski's strong postseason run. Entering Monday's semifinals, Canady had allowed 21 runs on 28 hits over 22 1/3 innings in eight NCAA tournament games and hadn't pitched more than four innings in a game since the regional win over Ole Miss.

"Obviously this postseason hasn't gone the way I wanted it to go," Canady admitted. "I feel like I haven't been my best. But like Coach Glasco said, it's about when you peak. I don’t know, if I’m going to be good, at least it’s toward the end of the year.”

In her start against Alabama, Canady demonstrated exceptional control, throwing 71 strikes on 99 pitches and effectively working both sides of the plate. Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy acknowledged Canady's effectiveness, noting, "If [Canady] throws a mistake, you cannot miss it. You cannot foul it back, and we had a couple of those. She's only going to probably throw four mistakes a game, and you've got to capitalize.”

Jasmyn Burns contributed a home run for Texas Tech, and Mihyia Davis added an insurance run in the seventh. Canady closed out the game with a fly out, securing the win.

This marks Canady's record 19th WCWS game as she chases a national championship that has eluded her in previous appearances. Having transferred to Texas Tech for the 2025 season after playing for Stanford, she now has an opportunity to win it all. The championship series will be a rematch of the 2025 series, which Texas won in a thrilling three-game series.

Dallas, TX – The Texas Tech Red Raiders, led by the stellar pitching of NiJaree Canady, have advanced to the Women's College World Series championship series. Canady's commanding performance in a must-win game against No. 1 Alabama secured their place in the finals, setting up a rematch of the 2025 championship series against Texas. This development is significant for college softball fans as it features two of the nation's top programs and a highly anticipated showdown between elite pitchers.
