Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar found himself at a loss for words after guiding his team to a remarkable second consecutive Indian Premier League (IPL) title. Patidar admitted that the prospect of captaining RCB and lifting the championship trophy was beyond his wildest dreams when he first joined the franchise.

RCB successfully defended their title with a five-wicket victory over the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 final, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The bowlers played a crucial role, restricting the Titans to 155/8, a target that Virat Kohli anchored with an unbeaten 75.

A Moment of Disbelief

Reflecting on the triumph, Patidar described the emotions as difficult to articulate. "I think it feels superb, you know," he said. "When we came here, a lot of memory of last year, the way we played last year. But at the same time, we have to be more in the present and feeling good. I think I don’t have words to express, but I’m feeling good."

Bowling Strategy Pays Off

The RCB skipper revealed that bowling first was a pre-determined strategy, and he lauded his bowling attack for executing the plan flawlessly. "Yeah, it was a clear plan. I think when we win the toss, it’s easy to chase, you know, and our plan was easy – get their top three in the powerplay, so it will be easy for us. And the way our bowlers bowled throughout the tournament, not in this match, I think it was superb."

He specifically acknowledged the contributions of the entire bowling unit, including Bhuvi, Hazlewood, Rasikh, KP, Suyash, and Sheppy, for their consistent performances throughout the season.

A Personal Journey

The title win marked a significant personal milestone for Patidar, who joined RCB in 2022. He now joins an elite group of captains who have successfully defended an IPL title. "To be honest, I never dreamed of that, to be a captain and lifting a trophy for RCB," Patidar confessed. "I think it was all written and I’m grateful for it."

Reduced Pressure, Increased Confidence

Patidar noted that the pressure on the squad felt less intense this season compared to their maiden title win the previous year. He attributed this to the team's confident performance throughout the tournament, with players exhibiting a positive mindset. "Yeah, obviously, I think last year there was a lot of pressure because it was the first year for us (winning the title). And this year, I think we were pretty much confident because of the way we played in this tournament and everyone was looking in a good frame of mind."

Fan Support

The captain also expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the RCB fans, who transformed various venues into virtual home grounds for the team. "It was good to see fans were coming in every ground wherever we go. It feels like a home ground for us. So I think overall it was great, great for RCB."

Enhanced Batting and Mentorship

Patidar credited his improved batting form to rigorous pre-tournament preparation and the invaluable guidance received from senior players within the franchise. "I think before entering the tournament, the pre-tournament prep was very good for me. The way I looked at my batting, I tried to analyse where I can improve, which are the shots I can improve on against the fast bowlers especially."

He highlighted his work with Dinesh Karthik (DK) and Virat Kohli (VK Bhai), stating, "I got so many inputs, ideas, and it helped me."

Kohli's Influence

The RCB captain also emphasized Virat Kohli's significant impact within the dressing room, particularly his supportive role for younger players. "I think whenever I see him, on the field and off the field also, he is always there for the team. He is always there for the players, especially the new players who are coming in." "They have a lot of hesitation to speak, but he goes straight away and talks to them. So I think it was superb."

A Message to the Fans

Patidar concluded his post-match remarks with a special message for the dedicated RCB fanbase: "So this one is for you again, RCB fans – Ee Salanu Cup Namdu (This year also the cup is ours)."

For a captain who never envisioned leading RCB to a championship, Rajat Patidar has now secured two IPL titles in as many seasons, etching his name into the franchise's history.
