Roch Cholowsky’s professional career is officially underway. Less than a month after the Chicago White Sox made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, the 21-year-old shortstop debuted Tuesday night for High-A Winston-Salem, batting second and playing the field in a 5-2 extra-inning loss to Asheville at Truist Stadium.

The box score was quiet: hitless in five plate appearances with a walk, including a swinging strikeout in his first pro at-bat and a fielder’s choice in his second. Cholowsky cleanly handled all four balls hit his way at shortstop. For a player carrying the weight of a No. 1 pick, the night was less about production than about the starting point.

First pro night: clean defense, quiet bat

Batting second in the Dash lineup, Cholowsky ended the top of the first inning with his first professional fielding chance. At the plate, he went down swinging in his first at-bat, then reached on a fielder’s choice in his second plate appearance, grounding a ball up the middle that forced Ely Brown — ranked No. 26 in the White Sox system — at second. A walk later in the game gave him his only baserunning appearance.

The Arizona native arrived in professional baseball with one of the most complete résumés in the 2026 class. After earning freshman All-American recognition at UCLA in 2024, Cholowsky broke out as a sophomore in 2025 and followed with an equally strong junior campaign.

He started all 60 games at shortstop for the Bruins and slashed .320/.452/.636 with 21 home runs, 73 runs and 60 RBIs. That performance earned him his second consecutive Big Ten Player of the Year award, making him only the third player in conference history to win the honor in back-to-back seasons.

The combination of offensive production and defensive tools made Cholowsky one of the most coveted players in the draft. The White Sox ended the suspense immediately, selecting him first overall and making him the third UCLA player ever taken with the No. 1 pick.

A record bonus and a development plan

Cholowsky and the club agreed to a record-breaking $10.35 million signing bonus, a reflection of how highly Chicago rates his ceiling. In the weeks after the draft, he took part in the White Sox development program in Charlotte and Arizona, which included Bridge League games and his first unofficial professional home run.

“I’ve taken a lot of big strides just in the last couple of weeks,” Cholowsky told MLB.com. “Being able to see the output on the field is pretty cool. I’m excited to carry those at-bats with me.”

He added: “I say this is everything you dream of. But there’s a lot of stuff I dreamt of — going to college, getting drafted and now playing professional baseball. It’s been one big dream. Being able to live it, it’s a lot of excitement. … I can’t wait to get started.”

For Chicago, Cholowsky is the centerpiece of a rebuilding effort. The assignment to High-A gives him a chance to face advanced pitching while continuing to develop at shortstop, the position the organization hopes he anchors for years.
