South Korea's national football team coach, Hong Myung-bo, has announced his 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The squad features a contingent of six players from the domestic K League, representing the lowest inclusion of K League players since 2014, when Hong Myung-bo also served as head coach.

The K League players making the cut include goalkeepers Jo Hyeon-woo from Ulsan HD and Song Bum-keun from Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. The defensive line sees Daejeon Hana Citizen's Kim Moon-hwan and Gangwon FC's Lee Gi-hyeok earning spots. Midfielders Lee Dong-gyeong of Ulsan HD and Kim Jin-gyu of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors complete the K League representation in the Taeguk Warriors' squad.

Squad Composition and Training Members

Beyond the official 26-man roster, Jeonbuk's Kang Sang-yoon and Cho Wi-je will travel with the squad as training members. Their role is to provide cover and be on standby should any injuries occur within their respective positions before or during the tournament. This arrangement allows for immediate replacements without having to call up players from the preliminary 55-man squad for those specific roles.

Additionally, goalkeeping coach Yang Young-min requested an extra goalkeeper to ensure effective training sessions. FC Seoul's Yoon Gi-wook has been selected for this role, chosen over Pohang's Lee Seung-hwan. Yoon, part of the U21 national team setup, will gain valuable senior-level experience by staying with the squad in Mexico until just before the tournament officially commences.

Pre-Tournament Schedule

The initial segment of the South Korean squad departed for Salt Lake City on Monday, May 18th, to begin their pre-tournament preparations. They are scheduled to play two friendly matches: against Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, May 30th (local time), and against El Salvador on June 3rd. These matches will provide crucial opportunities for the squad to gel and for the coaching staff to finalize tactical approaches.

Europe-based players are expected to join the team in the U.S. from mid-to-late May, with their arrival dates dependent on their individual club commitments. The full pre-tournament camp is set to begin on May 18th. Following the friendly matches and training camp, the squad will relocate to their World Cup base in Guadalajara, Mexico, on June 5th, ahead of the tournament's start.

Historical K League Representation

The inclusion of six K League players in the 2026 squad marks a significant shift in the balance between domestic and international-based players. This number matches the joint-lowest K League contingent in World Cup history, last seen in 2014, under the same coach, Hong Myung-bo. Historically, K League representation has been much higher, with 20 players in the 1998 squad and 18 in 1986 and 1998 squads. The 2002 World Cup, co-hosted by South Korea and Japan, saw 14 K League players in the squad.

Over 11 World Cup cycles, an average of 13.8 K League-based players have been included per squad, rising slightly to 14.2 if Sangmu players from 1994 and 1998 are considered separately. The trend from 2002 onwards generally settled between 12 and 16 domestic players, making the current six-player selection a clear outlier and a point of interest for followers of South Korean football.
