Among the celebrated athletes was Jenna Thevanau, who moved to Northern Ireland from South Africa and competed in the equestrian program. “I feel like I’m in my own new home in Ireland,” she shared, expressing her pride and happiness. Her sister, Candace Street, who works for Special Olympics, highlighted the profound impact these programs have. “It gives them a sense of purpose,” Street stated, emphasizing how participation allows athletes to “achieve what they can within themselves, within their abilities.”
The Special Olympics Ireland Games are held every four years. Claire O’Neill, 28, from Lisburn, secured gold and silver medals in badminton, describing her performance as “really well” despite facing tough competition. Eamonn Brummitt, in his early 50s and from County Monaghan, earned gold and bronze medals in table tennis. He called competing in the Ireland Games a “great experience” and expressed his hope to be selected for next year’s Special Olympics. Brummitt also noted the significance of the welcome event at Stormont, calling it a “great experience” to have never visited the venue before.
Adam Matchett, 18, from Belfast, achieved fifth place in gymnastics. He felt he performed “quite decent” and found the welcome event “amazing.” Matchett is eagerly anticipating the possibility of competing in next year’s Special Olympics. Jackie Stewart, 48, from Downpatrick, won gold and silver medals in bocce, feeling “brilliant” about her performance and expressing her pride.
Government Recognition and Support
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons was present at the Stormont event to welcome the Team Ulster athletes. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the athletes’ hard work and accomplishments. “We wanted to host this event to show that we recognise the hard work, the determination that went into it, and to promote sport as well,” Lyons said.
He further underscored the broader significance of the Special Olympics, stating, “The Special Olympics was really important to sport because we want sport to be inclusive. Sport is something that is for everybody, everybody can benefit from it and today is another reminder of that – of just how important it is and the benefits that it can bring to people.”
