Switzerland’s World Cup journey ended in the quarter-finals, with manager Murat Yakin pointing to a controversial new rule as the primary reason for their defeat against Argentina. The Swiss coach believes the “mistaken identity” rule, which led to a red card for forward Breel Embolo, unfairly impacted the game.

Yakin’s Frustration with the Rule

The incident occurred during Switzerland’s 3-1 loss to Argentina. Initially, Leandro Paredes was cautioned for a challenge on Embolo. However, the referee, after reviewing the situation with VAR, determined that Embolo had dived and issued him a second yellow card, resulting in a red card.

Yakin argued vehemently against the application of the rule, stating that Paredes should not have been booked in the first place and that the subsequent decision to send off Embolo was “extremely hurtful” and “unacceptable.” He felt the rule, designed to correct identification errors in bookings, was applied in a way that destroyed his team’s performance.

“We were punished for a rule that is completely unacceptable,” Yakin stated. “I don’t understand. It is very painful we are eliminated that way. I don’t think we deserved it and in my opinion our boys are the real heroes.”

The Manager’s View on the Incident

Yakin described the situation as “completely misunderstanding” and highlighted that such interactions have occurred numerous times previously without leading to a dismissal. He felt the referee’s intervention, based on this new rule, was a critical error.

“There was definitely no reason to award that yellow card, I don’t understand it, it was a harmless situation, he should have let the ball freely,” Yakin added.

He refused to place any blame on Embolo, emphasizing that the player was visibly distressed by the outcome. “I don’t blame him at all. That would be absurd,” Yakin said. “Obviously, he is shattered. He couldn’t help the team today and it hurts him and us. I think it was a referee mistake.”

Context of the Match

Switzerland had managed to equalize through Dan Ndoye shortly before Embolo’s dismissal. However, after going down to ten men, they conceded two extra-time goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez, ultimately losing the match. This marked Switzerland’s first quarter-final appearance in 72 years, making the manner of their exit particularly disappointing for the team and its supporters.

The rule in question is understood to be a recent addition aimed at ensuring the correct player is disciplined during chaotic on-field moments, particularly when multiple players are involved in an incident. While intended to improve accuracy, Yakin’s reaction suggests its implementation has led to unintended consequences and significant frustration for managers and players.
