Two Arrested as Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano Fans Clash Ahead of Europa Conference League Final
Police intervened in disturbances involving supporters of Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig, leading to two arrests and dispersal orders for dozens of fans.

Police in Leipzig have reported two arrests and issued dispersal orders to approximately 60 Crystal Palace fans classified as "known troublemakers" following clashes with supporters of Spanish club Rayo Vallecano. The incidents occurred in the German city center on Tuesday evening, ahead of Wednesday's Europa Conference League final between the two clubs.
Fan Disturbances Reported
Saxon State Police confirmed that disturbances broke out around 8:00 PM local time on Tuesday, involving around 300 Rayo Vallecano fans and a group of Crystal Palace supporters. According to a police statement, the clashes occurred outside Leo's Brasserie and Dhillons, where bottles, beer glasses, and furniture were reportedly thrown. Physical altercations also took place between the rival fan groups.
Police intervention was immediate, with officers separating the groups and identifying over 300 individuals involved. Dispersal orders were issued to all participants. The operation to manage the fan disturbances concluded in the early hours of Wednesday morning, around 3:15 AM.
Injured Officers
During the confrontations, two police officers, one from the Federal Police and another from the State Police, sustained minor injuries.
Crystal Palace Contingent
The police statement highlighted that approximately 60 individuals identified as "known troublemakers" from Crystal Palace were directed to the Penguin Ice Bar area. These individuals reportedly provoked passing Spanish fans and were subsequently surrounded by federal police.
Rayo Vallecano Fan Presence
The Saxon State Police noted that approximately 300 Rayo Vallecano fans, considered to be at high risk of hooliganism, had gathered in the city center prior to the disturbances.
Peaceful Fan Zone
Despite the incidents in the city center, the designated 'fan fest' in Leipzig's market area remained peaceful. This area hosted around 2,000 fans from both clubs.
Significance for Supporters
The clashes highlight the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in managing large fan gatherings for major football tournaments. For supporters of both Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano, the pre-match atmosphere was marred by these unfortunate events, detracting from the excitement of their clubs' first European final appearance. The incidents underscore the importance of maintaining order and ensuring the safety of all attendees at such high-profile sporting events.
