The United States Men’s National Team is making preparations for their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Australia, but the availability of their star player, Christian Pulisic, remains uncertain. Pulisic was substituted at halftime during the team’s dominant 4-1 victory over Paraguay and is still experiencing discomfort, leading to the possibility that he will miss the next fixture.

Pulisic’s Injury Prompted Concern

Following a strong first half against Paraguay, during which the USMNT established a commanding 3-0 lead, head coach Mauricio Pochettino made the decision to remove Pulisic from the game. This substitution immediately raised concerns among fans about a potential injury to the team’s talisman. Both Pochettino and Pulisic himself initially sought to quell these worries, suggesting the issue was not serious.

“I’m really hoping that it’s nothing,” Pulisic stated after the match. “Taking a little bit of precaution tonight but I’m hoping I’ll be fine in the next few days. I’ve had similar things before. I’m staying positive. I don’t think it’s anything.”

Pochettino corroborated this, explaining that Pulisic had sustained a “kick, a knock” during a training session two days prior. The injury became more apparent at halftime when Pulisic “got cold” and “felt it more,” prompting the “last-minute change.” At the time, Pochettino expressed optimism: “Now I think it’s better and hope for the next game he will be available.”

Lingering Doubts Ahead of Australia Match

However, a week later and just one day before the crucial match against Australia, Pulisic has yet to fully return to practice. In a press conference on Friday, Pochettino addressed Pulisic’s condition, stating he is “much better” but not yet at full health. The coach acknowledged that the team may need to proceed without him.

“I think tonight, or the day before the game, we have a meeting with our medical area and we will assess the whole group, the players, and tomorrow we will communicate and see all the things that [we] can agree [on] tonight,” Pochettino said, as reported by ESPN. “He’s evolving. He’s much better from Friday. We’ll see. I think at the moment, if we see he’s not available for tomorrow, he will be available for the next game. I think he’s doing a massive effort trying to be ready.”

Pochettino emphasized Pulisic’s dedication, noting his “fantastic effort to try to be ready as soon as possible.”

Contingency Planning Underway

With Pulisic’s status uncertain, Pochettino is actively evaluating alternative lineup options for the upcoming game against Australia. “We are evaluating all the possibilities, just in case, and then we will decide when we have the confirmation in one or another direction tonight,” the coach confirmed.

Should Pulisic be unable to play, potential replacements in the attacking third include Brenden Aaronson, Giovanni Reyna, Timothy Weah, and Alejandro Zendejas. USMNT supporters are likely to await the final confirmation of Pulisic’s availability closer to kickoff.

The potential absence of Christian Pulisic presents a significant challenge for the USMNT as they aim to build on their opening victory. His creativity and goal-scoring threat are vital to the team’s offensive strategy, and his unavailability would necessitate tactical adjustments and a reliance on other attacking players to step up against a competitive Australian side.
