West Warwick Baseball Advances to Pod 2 Championship with Gritty Win
The West Warwick Wizards overcame an early deficit and secured a 6-4 victory over North Providence to reach the Division II Pod 2 Championship game, showcasing resilience and team cohesion.

West Warwick baseball is one step closer to ending its championship drought after a resilient 6-4 victory over North Providence in the Division II Winners' Final. The Wizards, who have come close in recent seasons, demonstrated grit and determination at McCarthy Field to advance to the Pod 2 Championship. They now await the winner of the North Providence versus Chariho matchup.
This marks the second time in three seasons that West Warwick has reached a pod final. In 2024, the team finished as runner-up in Division III, a result that saw them promoted to Division II. Last season, they compiled a 14-7 record, winning two playoff games before being eliminated in the quarterfinals. The close losses have forged a determined senior class, eager to bring a championship home.
"The last three years, we’ve come close, and we come back knowing that we have to fight," said Joe Riviera, who contributed with a 2-for-3 performance and a run scored. "Knowing that if we keep fighting, we can make it far, and that’s what we’re doing this year."
Early Stumbles and Defensive Adjustments
North Providence, entering the game with eight wins in its last nine contests, took an early 2-0 lead. However, West Warwick tightened its defense and responded in the second inning. Mason Hunt, who pitched four innings to secure the win, stranded two runners in scoring position. West Warwick then capitalized on a North Providence error to tie the game. A dropped third strike at third base led to an RBI double from Charles Brown, who later scored on another error.
"It feels great – I can always trust my team," stated Hunt. "The defense is great. I didn’t have my best stuff today, but I can just trust my defense and get through the win. We just stayed together and didn’t lose our composure. We just had to get some hits and get on the board."
Key Offensive Contributions
The Wizards surged ahead in the third inning, plating three runs. Consecutive walks to Riviera and Anthony Burt set the stage. Nick Andruchow then delivered a triple to center field, driving in both runners. Andruchow scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Hunt, extending West Warwick's lead.
Despite being outhit 12-5 by North Providence, West Warwick managed to add an insurance run in the sixth inning. Jair Blanco tripled to center and scored on a ground out by Brown, sealing the victory.
Team Chemistry as a Driving Force
Andruchow emphasized the importance of team unity this season. "Playing together is the biggest part of our game," he said. "Last year we had some individual [talent] and we weren’t really playing together. I feel like that’s why we got bounced early, but this year we have a really good team atmosphere, and I think we can go all the way."
Freshman Michael Sabetta provided three innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs on five hits with two walks. He successfully stranded runners on first and second with a lineout to left field to end the Cougars' threat.
"We’re a big team," Riviera added. "West Warwick baseball is a family. We come here locked in and do our jobs for each and every one of us and whoever’s pitching, we got their back."
This win underscores West Warwick's progression and their determination to achieve a long-awaited championship. The team's ability to overcome adversity and rely on each other bodes well as they head into the championship game.
