Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras found a profound way to connect with his homeland, Venezuela, on Monday night, channeling his distress over the recent earthquakes into a powerful 421-foot home run against the Washington Nationals. The emotional blast, his 18th of the season, was part of a 6-3 victory for the Red Sox.

Moments after his impactful hit, Contreras was visibly overcome with emotion, breaking down in tears in the dugout. The anguish stems from the devastating earthquakes that have recently struck his native country, leaving hundreds dead and many more affected.

Acknowledging Home Country’s Pain

“Everything that’s going on in Venezuela, it’s not easy to hide,” Contreras told reporters after the game. “It’s not easy just to show up and play with everything that is going on in my country.” The 34-year-old, born in Puerto Cabello, expressed the deep urge to be home and assist in recovery efforts, a desire he cannot fulfill at this time.

Shouting for Venezuela

As he rounded the bases after his three-run shot, Contreras looked toward the Boston dugout and shouted “Venezuela.” He described the home run as a prayer for his country, a physical act of support when he felt unable to be there in person. “I feel like I could be there helping people and I can’t do that,” he said. “And the homer just represents something that I pray to God for it to happen, because that’s the only thing I can do for Venezuela right now physically. And that’s why I was emotional.”

Frustration Over Aid Efforts

Contreras also shared his frustration regarding reports of difficulties faced by volunteers and aid packages trying to reach those in need. “It sucks seeing so many bad things going on in Venezuela,” he stated. “I don’t think we deserve all of this. We’re a good people. Good country. We are good people.”

Ejection Follows Emotional Outburst

Contreras’ game concluded early in the second inning when first base umpire Nic Lentz ejected him. The umpire ruled that Contreras failed to check his swing on a pitch that was called a strike, ending his participation in the game prematurely.
